Airing on PBS since 2003, Independent Lens is television’s largest showcase of independent documentary film. When their team came to us for a site upgrade, they felt that it needed three basic things: simplification, optimization, and modernization. After a decade of broadcast, their website had accrued over 300 episodes and associated sub-directories and posts, pulling from a mixture of admins, server side includes and statically-built HTML pages. Another 800 video assets sat in the PBS COVE library but were not natively accessible on the site. Our primary task was to consolidate all of these sources into a centralized WordPress instance with a highly customized admin. Not only did this make the day-to-day management of the site far simpler and intuitive for the client, it allowed them much greater control over their content.
Our second task was to modernize the design. Working in intimate collaboration with the digital team at ITVS, we developed a highly responsive and immersive site that works well across devices and at all screen sizes. Overall, the site constitutes a significant upgrade, and allows the Independent Lens team great flexibility in promoting their diverse slate of independent film.
